How To Experience Food Freedom And Eat Foods That Make YouR Body Feel Good

When I was a kid, my Uncle Johnny used to make us Doritos Nachos every time we came over to hang out with my cousin.

Whenever I have nachos it brings back nostalgic memories, but, because I’m not eight anymore, my body doesn’t look at them with the same fond feelings as my mind does. So I wanted to find a way to incorporate that memory with something that feels a little better in my stomach.

Today, I’ve partnered with Shady Brook Farms to show you a delicious nacho bowl using their Ground Turkey - this is definitely a bit easier on the stomach than traditional nachos!

When I first started down a journey to food freedom, I thought it meant I should eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it. So that’s exactly what I did, and soon found out that is not exactly what food freedom means.

Yes, you should eat foods you want to enjoy, but I quickly realized that eating foods that made my stomach upset was the opposite of eating intuitively. So I had to reset. Like Shady Brook Farms, I believe a reset starts with a small step forward. For me, that meant that I needed to simplify the way I thought about food. I wanted to find foods I enjoyed, but didn’t make me feel sick.

Experiencing food freedom means that you eat mindfully, enjoying a variety of foods that make you feel great.

Here are 5 Ways to Experience Food Freedom

  1. Focus on How Your Body Feels

When you make your food choices about how they make your body feel, you are more likely to enjoy your foods. This will help you refrain from the diet mindset

  1. Honor Your Hunger

When you are hungry, eat food. Stop putting off your hunger just because you feel it is too late to eat, or too early for a snack.

Your body is very smart and great at telling you when you need to eat. When you first start your journey, it will feel hard. You might feel like you eat too much at first, because you have been so used to suppressing hunger.

Understand that it will be much easier over time

  1. Stop assigning moral value to food.

Foods are not good or bad. They are simply foods that are more or less nutritious. Eating them in a balanced way will allow you to eat more freely.

When you assign forbidden foods, it is easy to lose control when you are around them. I remember when I wasn’t allowed to have cookies, so whenever they were around, I would eat a whole pan, and end up not feeling well. After finding food freedom, I can feel satisfied with a couple instead of feeling the need to binge.

  1. Shift Your Mindset About Healthy Eating

Eating healthy will not look the same for every person. There are considerations like food preference, intolerances and allergies.

It is wise to eat a variety of nutrient dense foods, but understand that obsessing over macronutrient values and counting calories follows a road to endless dieting.

  1. Simplify How You Think About Food

When you have consistently been at war with food, food freedom can seem like a completely foreign concept. Food doesn’t have to be complicated, and you can find foods that are both satisfying and nutritious.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy food is having a big salad filled with delicious ingredients.

So today, I want to share with you this Ground Turkey Nacho Bowl that is filled with flavor!

I am using Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey to show you this spin on a childhood favorite - The Nacho Bowl!

This particular recipe is low Fodmap friendly, but you can sub out or add any ingredients that you love.

Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey

Chipotle Lime Seasoning (or your favorite Taco Seasoning)

Tortilla Chips

Red Pepper

Tomatoes

Green Onion

Jicama

Corn

Lettuce

Lime

Dressing (I suggest something creamy, like ranch, or a chipotle dressing. I made an easy one with ACV, lactose free sour cream, hot sauce and seasonings)

This recipe is very easy and adaptable and can be adjusted to your tastes. For example, if you like avocado, back beans or regular onions, you can add those in as well!

Step 1: Add Ground Turkey To Pan and Brown

Cook the entire package of turkey. You can save the rest for leftovers or to use in other recipes. Add your seasoning in this step so the meat has the most flavor.

Chop your green onions

Step 2: While the meat is cooking chop your vegetables.

I like to chop everything into small pieces to make sure that I have a bit of everything in each bite.

Step 3: Put Your Salad together

Start with the lettuce then layer your vegetables and ground turkey on top. If you aren’t using tortilla strips, crush your chips into the bowl. Add the dressing and a squeeze of lime and mix together.
